Managing a team for the first time is a daunting prospect. Often new managers experience a "sink or swim sensation" as they are faced with the multitude of new responsibilities suddenly thrust on them.

Achieving results through a team whilst maintaining personal effectiveness and gaining the respect and support of that team are crucial to the success of a new manager. It is this transitional phase from employee to manager that is the most difficult - and the most important one to get right.

  • Show you why effective, deliberate communication is one of the biggest factors that influences staff motivation, loyalty and productivity
  • Expose you to "Situational Leadership" theory, enabling you to manage each staff member differently and appropriately in different situations
  • Look at how to build your staff into a Self-motivated Team, how to encourage teamwork and focus and motivate the people within the team
  • Take you through the "Mine Field" of Task Delegation, showing you why you need to do it, and how to control delegated tasks without interfering
  • Discuss Staff Performance - How to measure it, how to improve it, how to coach for it and steps to take within the labour law if it is not coming up to your expectations
  • Assist you in Solving everyday Problems and taking important Decisions by introducing you to a practical, proven decision making methodology
  • Help you to identify and work on potential weak areas in your management approach by teaching you how to perform a comprehensive "Personal Gap Analysis"

The leap to management is a significant one. Everything changes. Your technical competence and ability to do your job are now no longer the only important factors. You are now responsible and accountable for a team of people that, under your guidance, are expected to excel, and achieve their individual and organisation targets. This is an enormous responsibility - especially given that you have, up until now, been completely individually focussed.

New managers often feel they have been thrown in the deep end! The number of new responsibilities coupled with the daunting task of managing a team of people effectively often leaves the new manager feeling bewildered and unfocussed. It is this transitional phase that is so crucial to get right. You need to start as you mean to continue. Gaining the respect and buy-in from your new team is essential from the very beginning of your new assignment.

In order to be truly effective, you need to discover how to manage this transitional phase, and discover where you fit in and how you can meet the new expectations placed on you. This comprehensive 3 day training course will provide you with a solid grounding that will stand you in good stead for the remainder of your management career. Complex and difficult management principles are clearly and simply explained, leaving you ready to implement them in your department.

The Orientation to Management Program will provide you with the analytical thinking skills, motivation and the basic information you need to continue to grow and develop and ultimately excel in your role as a new manager.
